It started in training camp when there were questions about whether Rielly would crack the Leafs opening day roster or be returned to the Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL. While he broke camp with the Leafs, Rielly had to wait until the teams third game of the season to see action. Then he played his tenth regular season game on October 26th against the Pittsburgh Penguins, meaning the first year of his three year entry level contract had kicked in. On January 15th against the Buffalo Sabres, another threshold reached as Rielly played his 40th game, meaning this season would count as a full season of service toward the seven required for unrestricted free agency. All the while through the first two months Rielly fought to claim an everyday spot in Torontos top three defence pairings, forced out of the line up on nine different occasions as a healthy scratch. But that appears to be a thing of the past now too; Rielly has not watched from the press box since December 8th against Boston. “Obviously he feels a lot more comfortable,” said Randy Carlyle, before the team departed for Florida on Monday afternoon. “Were starting to see the true Morgan Rielly. I think like any young player, theyre conservative in the early going; they dont want to make any mistakes.” Now a fixture among the Leafs top six defencemen and also seeing time on a second power play pairing with Jake Gardiner, Rielly is beginning to emerge in the form of a confident puck carrier. “I think over the course of the year so far, Ive been able to gain some confidence and Ive really got pretty comfortable jumping up in the play and trying to carry the puck a bit more,” said Rielly. Now with points in six of his last nine games (1-5), Rielly has moved into third among Leafs defensemen in scoring. Paired with Tim Gleason since midway through last Thursdays game against the FFlorida Panthers, the veteran defenseman has been impressed with the 19-year-olds poise with the puck. Air Max 270 Discount . . “I notice how well he skates with the puck and how confident he looks skating with the puck,” said Gleason. “Its something that I wish I had when I was 19, 20 years old. Hes ahead of the game I think at his age, especially as a defenceman.” After playing with Jake Gardiner for a stretch of 10 games, a partnership with Gleason might be just the recipe to free Rielly up to take chances carrying the puck up the ice. “I hope thats the case,” said Gleason. “Hes a puck moving guy who skates well; hes one of those guys who can lead the rush and thats tough to do in this league. He can go whenever he wants and Im more than happy to kind of keep the fort down and do my thing. I think its a good mixture for sure.” The reassurance that Gleason wont stray too far from home has been beneficial for Rielly. “I like playing with Jake but playing with Timmys been great, hes always back there playing good ‘D and that helps me because I like to jump up a little bit.” So far, the feeling has been mutual for Gleason. “I have a good time playing with him,” Gleason explained. “If he has any questions, were different types of players so I dont know if Id have all the answers for him on the offensive side of things but hes grown really well since he started.” As Rielly continues to develop into the player the Leafs hoped they were getting when they drafted him fifth overall in 2012, Randy Carlyle insisted the Leafs will remain cautious in their approach with the young defenseman. “We dont want to get too far ahead of ourselves with any young player, we want to make sure we continue to measure and afford him the ice time that allows him to develop but, again, we dont want to put him in situations that he cant possibly have success in.” ' ' '
PITTSBURGH, Pa. Fred Mcgriff Jersey . - Brett Keisels locker at Heinz Field was already empty when his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates filed in following a 35-32 loss to New Orleans on Sunday.Theres no telling when, or if, the veteran defensive end will find his No. 99 jersey hanging in it again. The Steelers placed the 36-year-old on season-ending injured reserve Monday, about 24 hours after Keisel tore his triceps in the third quarter.Pittsburgh signed well-travelled Clifton Geathers to take Keisels spot on the 53-man roster, but Keisels departure leaves an emotional void that will be difficult for his enigmatic team to fill heading into a pressure-packed December. He gives leadership, cornerback William Gay said. Hes a guy that you know is going to fight to the end. He gave it everything he had. We want to fight for all individuals, but a guy that represents the Steelers, thats Brett Keisel. We have to keep fighting and we have to keep fighting for him.Keisel angrily paced the sideline after walking off the field in obvious pain. He waved off longtime trainer John Norwig and spent several minutes by himself before hugging a handful of teammates and disappearing down the tunnel, perhaps for good. The 13-year veteran had 17 tackles and a sack in 12 games following an abrupt return in August. The Steelers initially opted not to re-sign Keisel when his contract expired after the 2013 season, but reached out when they couldnt find anyone to play opposite Cam Heyward.Keisels steadying presence provided some semblance of stability during an uneven year. Pittsburgh fell to 7-5 after losing to the Saints, its third loss this season to a team at least three games under-.500 at the time. He remained a force despite his age and nearly sacked Drew Brees in the first quarter of what could be the final game of his career. It almost makes you want to cry when you lose a guy like that because hes a leader and so instrumental to what we do here, safety Mike Mitchell said. Weve got to rally around everyone else who is healthy. Its a group that now includes Geathers. Pittsburgh is Geathers sixth stop in five seasons. He had four tackles in six games with Washington earlier this year and now finds himself part of a unit that is struggling to create any kind of consistent pressure on the quarterback.Pittsburgh only got to Brees once on Sunday and failed to produce a turnover while Brees tossed five touchdown passes. New Orleans led by 19 points in the fourth quarter before a pair of late scores made the result look respectable. Not exactly the kind of performance the Steelers (7-5) anticipated coming off a bye week with a pivotal road game looming at first-place Cincinnati (8-3-1) on Sunday. Now they must find a way to press on without one of the most respected and popular players on a roster with only a handful of holdovers from the franchises most recent Super Bowl victory. Were in control of what happens from here on out, Mitchell said. Weve got to all rally together. Weve got to get better. Its not so much talking about it. Now weve got to go do it.On both sides of the ball. While Pittsburghs defence couldnt contain Brees, the offence kicked field goals when only touchdowns would do. Four drives stalled inside the New Orleans 35.That hadnt been an issue during a stretch where the Steelers went 4-1 to climb into the thick of the post-season chase. It reappeared against the NFLs 27th-ranked defence even on a day running back LeVeon Bell became just the sixth player in league history to go over 150 yards receiving and 75 yards rushing in the same game.Youve got to score points, Bell said. We didnt do that in the third and fourth quarter. Not when it mattered. The Steelers dominated the first 20 minutes, but couldnt finish drives in the end zone. The Saints steadied themselves in the second quarter and reeled off five touchdowns in a span of six possessions. While the Steelers are tired of explaining away poor performances, they have been resilient. They were waxed in Cleveland in early October and responded with three straight resounding wins. Do it again on Sunday against the Bengals and theyre right back in it.We cant look around us, linebacker Jason Worilds said. Thats the biggest thing. We have to focus on the task at hand. The task at hand is our next opponent. We do that, well be fine.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Khalil Greene Jersey . BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Orioles wrapped up their regular-season home schedule with a defeat, one that was much easier to take because of the circumstances surrounding it. Bill Almon Jersey . The Orioles 3-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday didnt impact their stature as AL East champions. Afterward, there was no heartfelt farewell to the fans, because Camden Yards will be open for playoff baseball in October. "Were excited to come back for the post-season," losing pitcher Miguel Gonzalez said. "Its exciting, definitely, for everyone." Boston took two of three from the Orioles, who have been playing without several regulars in the lineup since claiming the division crown on Tuesday. Baltimore still has a chance to catch the Los Angeles Angels for home-field advantage throughout the post-season, but manager Buck Showalters priority is keeping his team fresh and sharp for October. Centre fielder Adam Jones didnt start, and Nick Markakis and Steve Pearce were held out with minor injuries. The trend will continue during the final week, which begins with a four-game series at Yankee Stadium followed by three games in Toronto. Thats the benefit already of knowing youre in. "Its allowed us to do a lot of things we normally wouldnt be able to do," Showalter said. "Were trying to keep our priorities in order here, and thats getting Steve back and getting Adam rested up some and getting Nicky back and getting our bullpen as good as they can be." Gonzalez (9-9) allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings, his first start since Aug. 2 in which he failed to last six innings. He was pitching on a extra day of rest, which he believes will ultimately prove benficial. "It helped me. I felt good today," he said. "The ball was coming out well. I think its going to be all right for us for the post-season." The Orioles finished 50-31 at home, 31-10 since June 29. They did not lose successive games at Camden Yards after June 28-29. "Its been a good club, pretty consistent home and away," Showalter said. Joe Kelly pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and the Red Sox got home runs from Mookie Betts and David Ross. Boston may be in last place, but it hasnt quit trying to win. "With the amount of turnover that weve had and the new players weve added, theres always been good energy each day we take the field," manager John Farrell said. "It hasnt always worked out with the bottom line score, but our guys love to compete." Kelly (3-2) gave up two runs, walked three and struck out five in his fifth successive outing of at least six innings. It was his ninth start for Boston since being traded to St. Louis in the July 31 deal that sent John Lackey to the Cardinals. Edward Mujica got three outs for his eighth save. Betts hit his first career leadoff home run, ending a run of 67 at-bats without going deep, to give Boston the early lead, and a two-out single by Yoenis Cespedes made it 2-0 in the fifth. After Ross chased Gonzalez with a sixth-inning solo shot, Baltimore answered with two runs in the bottom half. David Lough hit an RBI double and Nelson Cruz drove in a run with a groundout. It was the 106th RBI of the season for Cruz, who was chosen Most Valuable Oriole before the game in balloting by the Baltimore media. TRAINERS ROOM Red Sox: SS Xander Bogaerts left in the second inning with neck stiffness and was replaced by former Orioles infielder Jemile Weeks. Orioles: Markakis (shoulder) sat out a fourth straight game and Pearce (wrist) missed his second in a row. Showalter was not concerned about eithers availability for the post-season. "Not at this point," the manager said. UP NEXT Red Sox: Boston has Monday off before opening a three-game series against Tampa Bay, the start of a season-ending homestand that includes three games against the Yankees. Orioles: LHP Wei-Yin Chen (16-4, 3.58 ERA) starts for Baltimore against the Yankees on Monday. Trevor Hoffman Jersey .C. -- Theyll remember the OT from the first Syracuse-Duke game -- and the Ts that decided Round 2. Cito Gaston Jersey . “Momentum is only as good as the next days starter,” the long-time Baltimore Orioles manager famously quipped.ATLANTA - Thats more like it, Tom Brady. After struggling for three weeks to get in sync with his new receivers, Brady threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns in his best outing of the season for the unbeaten New England Patriots, who held off a furious Atlanta comeback to beat the Falcons 30-23 on Sunday night. New England improved to 4-0 for the first time since its near-perfect season in 2007. "We slugged it out," Brady said. "We came to Atlanta, which is a tough place to play and theyve got a very good team. Its nice to win and be 4-0." The Patriots built a 30-13 lead before the Falcons rallied. Atlanta had a chance to tie it up in the final minute, but Aqib Talib knocked away Matt Ryans fourth-down pass for Roddy White in the end zone with 36 seconds remaining. "Weve got to do a better job of finishing out the game," New England coach Bill Belichick said, "but we did a good job of putting ourselves in that position with a 17-point lead with 6 minutes to go in the game." The Patriots again played without star tight end Rob Gronkowski and receiver Danny Amendola, both left at home with injuries. But the Brady-led offence finally looked like itself after struggling a bit the first three games. New England seemed in control when LeGarrette Blount scored on a 47-yard run, and Brady threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to rookie Kenbrell Thompkins. Thompkins, an undrafted free agent, finished with six catches for 127 yards — nearly as much as the first three games of his career. "Hes an impressive young player," Brady said. "Its really rare to see that with a young player, to step in with confidence like that he has." Julian Edelman chipped in with 118 yards on seven receptions. "Were missing quite a few guys," Brady said, "so hopefully when we get them back, well be more efficient." Atlanta (1-3) dropped two games below .500 for the first time since 2007 despite a career night from Tony Gonzalez. He had 12 catches for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns. "You get what you earn in the NFL," coach Mike Smith said. "Weve earned a 1-3 record through the first quarter of the season. Thats what we are." New England led just 13-10 before a wild final period. Blount stunned the Georgia Dome crowd with his burst throughh a gaping hole, cutting outside and dragging defenders into the end zone. Dinelson Lamet Jersey . After Matt Bryants 45-yard field goal brought the Falcons to 20-13, Brady guided the Patriots on an 80-yard drive that took only five plays and barely 2 minutes. Edelman hauled in a 16-yard pass, followed by 44-yard reception that set up the touchdown throw to Thompkins in the left corner of the end zone, sending many of the Atlanta fans heading to the exits with nearly 10 minutes left. They nearly missed an epic comeback after Stephen Gostkowskis third field goal pushed the Patriots to their 17-point lead. Gonzalez hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass, the Falcons recovered an onside kick, then drove for another field goal by Bryant. New England recovered a second onside kick, only to fumble a snap trying to convert on fourth down, turning it back over to the Falcons. Ryan completed a 49-yard pass to Julio Jones to put Atlanta in position to force overtime before a mostly empty stadium. The drive fell short, the Falcons bitten again by their season-long struggles in the red zone. Atlanta scored only one touchdown on six trips inside the 20. That included settling for a field goal on their first possession, when they had first-and-goal at the 6, and Smiths decision to go for it on fourth-and-2 from the 7. That failed when Ryan threw it behind White in the flats. "Were just not executing how we need to in the red zone," Smith said. "Were moving the ball well between the 20s. But were not ending with touchdowns. Youve got to score touchdowns in this league. Its an offensive league." New England got good production from its running game, especially on its first touchdown drive. Brady threw only twice on the 12-play, 75-yard possession, including a 1-yard touchdown pass to third-string tight end Matthew Mulligan. NOTES: Ryan completed 34 of 54 for 421 yards. ... The Falcons had won 14 in a row after losses. This is their first two-game losing streak since 2009. ... Atlanta, which faces the New York Jets in Week 5, has never lost three in a row under Smith. ... The Patriots rushed for 132 yards. Blount led with 64 yards on nine carries, while Ridley chipped in with 53 yards on 11 carries. ... In addition to breaking up Atlantas final pass, Talib also had an interception in the fourth quarter — his fourth of the season. ' ' '
